BOTOX Injections Bayside

With the various cosmetic procedures and anti-aging breakthroughs, it’s important to find a procedure that has a proven and noticeable result. Botulinum toxin, Botox, is a prescription medicine that is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Botox works by reducing muscle activity that causes lasting lines to form. With significant results, no surgery, and no recovery time, there are many reasons to get this treatment. Botox is made by a company called Allergan and has been used for over 20 years. Botox has shown an extremely high safety and effectiveness rate but in April, 2009 a new Botox competitor was approved by the FDA called Dysport. Although newer here in the US, Dysport has been available in Europe for quite some time. Botox and Dysport are very similar but our ophthalmologist in Bayside, Dr. Michel Ehrenhaus, is well educated in the differences.

Both Botox and Dysport are a form of botulinum type A, used to relax your muscles that cause frown lines and other overactive muscles of the face, like forehead lines and crow’s feet. Dysport is a smaller-sized molecule so its unit measurement is different than Botox. Both Botox and Dypsort are recommended to be injected every 3-6 months and can be used on other parts of your face and body. Both also have a high safety profile, and have been in use for many years. Dysport can be slightly less expensive but it depends, of course, on the total amount needed to accomplish your goals. Our ophthalmologist in Bayside has researched double-blind clinical studies, indicating both Botox and Dysport showing similar effectiveness and side effects, with the patient and doctor unable to tell the results apart.

Still being debated and studied are the differences that Dysport may not last quite as long, Dysport has a slightly quicker onset (2-5 days vs. 4-7 days for Botox), Dysport spreads to a wider area (Which can be good or bad, depending on the area being treated) and you need more Dysport to get the same result as Botox. Ultimately, it is far more important who is injecting your Botox or Dysport, than which of these two products you are using. Our experienced and highly trained ophthalmologist in Bayside is will consult with you and decide which product is best for you.

The main goal of cataract surgery is to remove the thickened, cloudy lens, and replace with an artificial intraocular lens implant. One exciting new option that our Bayside cataract surgeon would love to discuss with you is the option for your intraocular lens implant to be bifocal or multifocal, so as to eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lens following your cataract surgery. Among the reasons for a defective cornea can be keratoconus. This is a degenerative disease that causes the cornea to thin and lose its normal shape. Trauma or infections that may lead to corneal scaring are other possible causes for a malfunctioning cornea. In some cases, hereditary diseases such as lattice dystrophy and Fuchs’ dystrophy can also be responsible for a deterioration of the cornea. Regardless of what the cause is, our Bayside ophthalmologist can address the problem with a cornea transplant.

A full cornea transplant, which is also called a penetrating transplant, is one in which all of the cornea’s five layers a replaced. A full cornea transplant is not always needed, however. A partial, also called a lamellar transplant, replaces only some of the layers. As part of a consultation and preparation with our Bayside ophthalmologist, your options will be discussed in order to settle on which will be the right one for your circumstances.

The procedure itself can often be done using only a local anesthetic, in order to keep your eye from moving during the surgery. This will allow you to be awake throughout the process. Our Bayside ophthalmologist will remove your cornea using a special cutting instrument called a trephine. The cornea transplant will be carefully placed and then sewn using very thin stitches so that it is securely in position. Rest assured that Dr. Mike uses only state of the art equipment to ensure the best possible results. Successful cornea transplants will last at least 10 years.
